Preparing for your fertility assessment

It’s completely normal to feel a little worried when dealing with fertility issues, especially, if you have been trying to conceive for some time. For reassurance, you can undergo a fertility assessment, which can help diagnose any potential fertility issues you may have.

At TFP Fertility, we offer fertility assessments for various individuals. It's a fairly simple process, but being prepared always helps. It can make the whole process efficient and stress-free. So here's a few things to keep in mind.

How to prepare for a fertility assessment

During your assessment, you will be asked questions about your lifestyle and medical history. So, it may be helpful to write down any relevant information or concerns you might have.

Before your appointment, you can continue to eat and drink normally, there is no need to fast. However, it is advisable to limit your alcohol intake and avoid smoking, as these can affect your results.

For male patients, a fertility assessment includes a semen analysis. So, you should avoid sexual intercourse for at least two, but no more than four days, before your test. This will ensure the sperm count is not affected and help give an accurate measure of your fertility health.

What happens during a fertility assessment?

The process of a fertility assessment differs between men and women. When patients arrive at the fertility clinic, they will be asked to fill in a medical questionnaire. This will allow the team to evaluate body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and lifestyle choices.

Female fertility assessment

On the day of the appointment, patients will be taken to a private room. Female patients will undergo an anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) blood test, to measure their ovarian reserve (egg supply) and likely response to treatment. Additionally, they will have an antral follicle count (AFC) scan, which is a pelvic ultrasound, that counts the number of antral follicles. These are small fluid-filled sacs inside the ovaries that contain eggs. This scan provides an insight into how many eggs can be collected if fertility treatment is necessary and examines the condition of the patient’s womb to check for any abnormalities that may impact fertility.

Male fertility patient

For male patients, a semen analysis is needed to help assess fertility. At the clinic, they will be taken to a private production room, where they can produce a sperm sample. If the patient finds it difficult to produce a sample on the day, there is the option to reschedule the appointment or create a sample at home. At home, the patient will need to use the pot provided by the clinic and drop it off within an hour of it being produced. They will also have to ensure that the sample isn’t exposed to any extreme hot or cold temperatures. This test will help assess sperm health, including the volume, shape and movement.

Receiving the results

We understand it can be daunting when receiving the results of your fertility assessment. At TFP Fertility, we will discuss your results with you one week later during a consultation. If you are a male patient who has only booked a semen analysis, our embryologists will call you with the results on the same day.

During your consultation, our fertility team will discuss your results in detail and will address any questions you may have. They will also provide you with advice and guidance on which treatments may benefit you. However, it’s important to know there’s no obligation to go ahead with the treatment.
