Our assessments

We offer fertility assessments for individuals or couples at all our TFP Fertility clinics, with various packages designed to suit your personal circumstances.

You don’t need to have seen a GP or have a referral to book an assessment with us, and it just takes one or two visits to the clinic to complete all the necessary investigations and have a consultation with one of our specialists.

Most importantly, following your assessment, you’ll be given appropriate advice and have an opportunity to ask any questions about potential next steps.

Female fertility assessment

Firstly, we’ll ask you to complete a medical questionnaire, covering BMI, blood pressure and a lifestyle evaluation. Depending on the outcomes, we’ll arrange to carry out some tests:

AMH blood test

This is a blood test that assesses your ovarian reserve by checking your levels of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), a hormone produced by cells in the ovary.

AFC trans-vaginal scan

This is a pelvic ultrasound examination to assess your uterus and check for any abnormalities.

It also looks at your ovaries to determine the number of antral follicles. Ovarian antral follicle count (AFC) declines with increasing age.

Together these give an accurate measure of your fertility, and your likely response to any medication. Ideally the scan should take place in the first half of your menstrual cycle.

We aim to arrange for your blood test and scan to be done on the same day.

You may also require other tests to check your levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and progesterone.

We’ll then book you in for a consultation the following week, where we’ll guide you through your results.

We’ll also recommend and explain any treatment options you might benefit from, but of course there’s no obligation to go ahead with any treatment.

Male fertility assessment

After completing a medical questionnaire, you’ll be asked for a semen sample that will be analysed for volume, shape, size, and motility of sperm.

We usually only require a single sample, but it may need to be repeated if anything looks abnormal.

Other tests, such as hormonal profiles and genetic tests, may also be arranged where appropriate.

We’ll then talk you through the results.

Couples’ fertility assessment

We’ll ask each of you to complete a medical questionnaire, before carrying out the individual fertility tests outlined in the sections above.

For same-sex couples, one or both of you can be assessed.

We’ll then discuss the results of your tests and recommend relevant treatment options for you to consider.
