Your guide to LGBTQ+ fertility

Today, 3 in 4 LGBTQ+ people aged between 18 to 35 have children or are planning to – and for many, fertility treatment is part of that journey.

We’re here to help you choose the path that’s right for you. We’ll guide you through the options available, help you understand how funding works, and the steps you need to take as you embark upon your unique journey to parenthood.

Becoming an LGBTQ+ parent

Whether you’re a same-sex couple, single, trans or non-binary person, co-parent or poly family seeking ways to become a parent, you deserve the best treatment, advice and support.

There are many ways to become a parent today as an LGBTQ+ person, including:

  • Natural conception

  • Fertility treatment (IVF, IUI, ICSI)

  • Surrogacy

  • Using a donor

  • Co-parenting

  • Adopting

  • Fostering

Before you start your journey, a fertility assessment can help define the best options for you, by checking the health of your sperm, eggs or gametes.

Fertility treatments

Find out which treatment paths could be an option for you, including fertility preservation to keep options open for the future.

Workplace rights and LGBTQ+ fertility

Currently, workplace rights only apply once an embryo has been transferred or the gestational parent becomes pregnant, and this applies to LGBTQ+ parents too.

If you’re having fertility treatment, it should be treated as any other medical appointment.

The Equality and Human Rights Code of Practice advises that your employer should treat time off for fertility treatment (IVF) sympathetically.

Funding options

Getting NHS-funded fertility treatment can be confusing.

Policies for LGBTQ+ fertility funding for many areas of the country are under review.

Ultimately, your funding options depend on where you live, but:

  • Same-sex female couples may be required to fund between 6 and 12 rounds of artificial insemination before they can have NHS-funded IVF

  • You’ll need to meet other requirements for NHS-funded IVF, which can include BMI and smoking status

  • In some parts of the country, trans and non-binary people can access NHS-funded fertility preservation

  • Surrogacy is not funded by the NHS, which includes any IVF for the surrogate.

To find out more information about your funding options, you’ll need to speak to your GP.

They can discuss the policies and criteria of the funding available through your local integrated care board.

Access Fertility may be able to offer funding support for LGBTQ+ people having fertility treatment.
