How you can support a loved one going through fertility treatment

Watching a loved one go through fertility treatment can be difficult. While some individuals may prefer to be open about their experiences, others might be more reserved. The process is filled with emotional ups and downs, and you may want to reach out, but feel unsure about how to help. Here are some tips to support your loved one on this journey.

Tips for supporting your loved one on their fertility journey

Follow their lead - Your loved one may choose to share their story to break the stigma surrounding IVF or decide to confide in a small circle of friends and family. Respect their choice regarding what they want to share. Listen to and acknowledge their emotions and be there for them.

If they wish not to discuss their experience or need a few days without conversation, your loved one will share their story when ready.

Educate yourself – You don't need to be an expert, but understanding fertility treatments can be beneficial. It's important to comprehend not only the processes involved but also the emotional and physical effects on your loved one. Look for reliable resources, such as guides and blogs on official fertility clinic websites or books about the process. Avoid using Google for medical advice; stick to reputable sources and healthcare professionals' recommendations.

Provide a listening ear – Sometimes, your loved one may just need someone to vent to or express their concerns without judgment. Be a supportive listener rather than trying to provide solutions. If they confide in you about their struggles, respect their privacy and don’t share their experiences with others. Building that trust is crucial.

Avoid giving advice – While it’s natural to want to help by offering advice, it's best to refrain from giving unsolicited guidance, especially if you haven’t been through fertility treatment yourself. If your loved one asks for advice, that's fine. Otherwise, focus on supporting them in practical ways, like running errands or managing household responsibilities.

Respect their privacy- If your loved one chooses not to talk, that’s okay. Let them open up when they are ready. It’s important to support them with their decisions, whether they decline invitations to dinner or other social events. Sometimes, they may need some time alone. If you’re worried, send a message to let them know you’re there wherever they need to talk.

Be patient – It may take time for your loved one to open up about their experience. Don’t take it personally if they decide not to share everything right away; they may feel more comfortable discussing it at a later stage. Keep in mind that processing their emotions can also take time, so being patient is crucial.

Provide a sense of normalcy – A fertility journey can be an emotional rollercoaster, so maintaining routines can help provide a sense of stability. Continuing with regular activities, hobbies and social events can be a positive distraction from their treatment. Engaging in simple activities like going for a walk or watching a film together can offer a necessary escape. However, if your loved one doesn’t feel up to it, don’t push them.

Help with day-to-day activities – Assisting your loved one with daily tasks can offer substantial support. Whether it’s accompanying them to appointments, cooking meals, or handling grocery shopping, clarifying how you can help can make a significant difference.

Let them know you are there – Reassure your loved one that you’re available whenever they need support. There’s no need to constantly text or call them; just knowing that you are a message or phone call away can provide immense comfort.
