Compensation for egg and sperm donors in the UK is changing

Some important changes are about to come in place for how egg and sperm donors are compensated in the UK.

Following guidance from industry regulators, HFEA (Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority), the compensation available will increase from 1st October, 2024.

These new guidelines state that sperm donors will receive £10 more per donation (rising to £45) whereas compensation for egg donors will increase by more than £200 per donation cycle – from £750 to £985.

It is illegal in the UK to pay a person for their egg or sperm donation; however, donor compensation was introduced in 2011 to reimburse donors for the expenses they incur throughout their donation cycle. This includes transport, childcare and loss of earnings.

The rate of compensation hasn’t increased since it was first introduced, however, the rise in inflation over the last decade has meant the value no longer reflects the intended purpose of compensation.

The HFEA’s aim for this increase is to make it easier for those donating altruistically to do so, factoring in the cost of getting to and from their chosen clinic during their donation.

If you’re an active donor or considering becoming one and would like further guidance on the compensation available, please get in touch.
