EmbryoGlue

EmbryoGlue is a substance that is used in the final stage of IVF treatment to help maximise the chance of fertility success.

TFP Fertility science

What is EmbryoGlue?

EmbryoGlue is made of a substance called hyaluronan, which is used to improve the chance of success of an individual undergoing fertility treatment. There are no risks associated with using EmbryoGlue, and it can be recommended to individuals who have had previous unsuccessful IVF treatments.

It is used during an embryo transfer, which is the final phase of IVF (in vitro fertilisation treatment). EmbryoGlue aims to help the embryo implant, which is an important stage of IVF treatment.

How much is EmbryoGlue?

During your IVF treatment, you will be notified if EmbryoGlue is going to be used for your embryo transfer.

The cost of this add-on is included in your treatment package, so there’s no extra charge.

How does EmbryoGlue work?

EmbryoGlue helps bridge the embryo and womb together, allowing the implantation to work.

The high concentration of hyaluronan is thought to protect the embryo and help it bind and implant to the lining of the womb.

Evidence and regulations

According to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the use of hyaluronate enriched pre-transfer culture medium, like EmbryoGlue, has been rated as an amber add-on treatment. This means that some studies have shown that it is effective, and some have shown that it is not.

A Cochrane analysis of available trial evidence conducted in 2020 showed that using hyaluronic acid in embryo transfer media does increase the chance of clinical pregnancy and live birth.
