Sperm freezing is one of the most common ways of preserving an individual's fertility, giving them the flexibility of having a child when they feel ready.
Whether you are focusing on your career, undergoing medical treatment or simply not ready to have a family yet, sperm freezing can be a viable option for you to consider.
Sperm freezing allows you to store your sample for when you feel ready to have a family. Additionally, you have the option to donate your sperm sample for someone else’s treatment, giving them the possibility of becoming a parent.
Sperm freezing is a procedure that involves collecting a person’s sperm and then cooling and storing it at a fertility clinic.
Before the process, you will be screened for infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C. This is so affected sperm samples are stored separately from others. You will also need to decide how long you would like your sperm to be stored.
You will attend an appointment at the clinic, where you’ll produce a fresh sperm sample. Your semen will be mixed with cryoprotectant, to prevent damage during freezing.
If you are unable to produce a fresh sample, we can collect a specimen via surgical sperm retrieval. This may be recommended if there are few or no sperm in your semen. Once the sperm is collected, it is divided into separate containers to be used in multiple treatments.
If you are looking to preserve your fertility, there are several benefits to freezing sperm.
If you hope to have a family but aren't ready yet, preserving your sperm can provide you with the flexibility you need. Whether you want to focus on your career before starting a family or simply don’t feel prepared, freezing sperm allows you the time to plan and make informed decisions about your future.
Certain medical treatments like chemotherapy can affect your fertility. If you plan to have a family in the future, it is advisable to freeze your sperm before undergoing treatment. This is important to know as cancer treatments, including radiation therapy and chemotherapy, can impact sperm quality and potentially lead to infertility issues.
Freezing sperm is a convenient option. It offers flexibility and peace of mind while supporting individuals with fertility concerns. Whether you are still deciding whether to have children or are undergoing medical treatment, you have the option to store your sample for up to 55 years. This gives you ample time to make your decision about starting a family.
As men age, both sperm count and quality may decline. Freezing your sperm at a younger age can help preserve your fertility and ensure that you have healthy sperm available when you choose to have children or become a donor.
At TFP Fertility, we have had patients use frozen sperm and gone on to have healthy babies.
We understand the decision to freeze your sperm can be a significant one. Whilst freezing your sperm cannot guarantee a future pregnancy, we estimate that around 50% of sperm will survive the thawing process and it can allow you to try at a time that's right for you.
