Fertility treatment can take a significant emotional toll on individuals. We understand that the path to having a baby is not always straightforward and can often be stressful, leaving you feeling overwhelmed. Whether you are just beginning your fertility journey or are currently undergoing treatment, receiving regular emotional support can help ease this burden.

Fertility counselling

How can counselling help?

While fertility treatments are primarily managed by consultants, embryologists, and nurses, having an opportunity to speak with someone impartial, without any judgment, can be incredibly valuable. A quiet and safe space to discuss emotions and feelings may be just what some people need. There are several ways that counselling can benefit you.

Explore your thoughts and feelings - Whether your fertility journey affects your relationships, finances, or you have experienced failed cycles, our counsellors are here to listen and guide you. They can help you explore ways to cope with these situations and prioritise self-care in a safe environment.

Manage stress and anxiety - Our counsellors can equip you with coping mechanisms and techniques to handle the stress that may arise during your fertility journey. Whether it involves jotting down your thoughts or connecting with people in similar situations, our counsellors will offer techniques to help manage your emotions effectively.

Reflect on the process and expectations - Counselling can assist individuals to reflect on their expectations of the treatment. Many patients may face disappointment when treatment does not lead to pregnancy. Support and guidance through counselling can help manage these struggles, making it easier to move forward and decide whether to undergo additional rounds of treatment.

Process loss – For those who have faced failed cycles, miscarriages, or an infertility diagnosis, having someone to talk to can help. Counselling provides a space to process complex emotions, such as grief, anger, trauma and guilt. Our counsellors can support and help facilitate conversations between partners, allowing you to address loss in different ways. This support can help restore your stability and confidence, if you wish to try again.

Improved decision-making – The initial consultation can feel overwhelming with excessive information to digest. Counselling sessions can offer the time to process complex clinical information and make an informed decision that feels right for you. Our counsellors will offer space to reflect on the experience.

Who can use the counselling service?

Fertility counselling is available for anyone considering treatment, currently undergoing it, or who has completed fertility treatment. You can attend these sessions alone or with your partner. At TFP Fertility, we offer counselling anytime, during, or after treatment, with sessions available over the phone, face-to-face, or via video service.

Depending on your treatment cycle, you are allowed up to three counselling sessions, lasting approximately 50 minutes. These sessions must be used within three months of a cycle. Additional sessions are available at an additional cost and for those requiring long-term therapy, may be referred to other agencies.

Can counselling impact fertility treatment success rates?

While fertility counselling doesn't directly impact treatment success rates, it can support your emotional health and wellbeing.

Individuals who attend counselling sessions often report lower levels of stress and anxiety during their fertility treatment. This often enables people to continue with their treatment, potentially improving chances of conception.
