What is IUI?

During intrauterine insemination (IUI), healthy, high-quality sperm are selected in the lab and carefully introduced directly into your uterus around ovulation to support natural fertilisation.

By placing sperm closer to the egg, IUI treatment increases the number of healthy sperm reaching the egg, improving the chances of fertilisation.

IUI fertility treatment can use sperm from your partner, co-parent, or a donor, depending on your individual circumstances.

How does IUI work? We tailor all treatment plans to the individual patient, but your IUI cycle will follow these steps:

Step one

Fertility tests and consultation

To begin your fertility journey, we'll book you in for some fertility tests and a consultation with one of our specialists.

This allows us to determine the best treatment for you.

Step two

Further investigations

Before you can start IUI, we need to check whether your fallopian tubes are open and healthy.

Using a procedure called HyCoSy, we inject a special dye into your uterus and check to see if the dye passes through your fallopian tubes with a vaginal ultrasound.

Step three

Fertility medication

We can perform IUI in a natural or stimulated cycle. If you're having a stimulated cycle, we'll prescribe some fertility medication to boost your egg production, increasing your chances of an egg being fertilised.

Step four

Monitoring scans

If you're having a stimulated IUI cycle, we'll perform regular ultrasound scans to monitor the development of your ovarian follicles - the small sacs of fluid in the ovaries that contains a growing egg.

Step five

Hormone medication

Shortly before insemination, you’ll be given a hormone injection called a trigger injection. This helps eggs to mature and be released, ready to travel down the fallopian tube and meet the sperm.

Step six

Semen sample

Your partner will produce a fresh semen sample on the day of insemination. If you're using donor sperm, this will be thawed.

The sperm is washed to remove seminal fluid and debris to reduce the risk of irritation to the uterus.

Step seven

Insemination

The best quality sperm is selected and injected into your uterus, using a flexible, thin tube called a catheter.

Natural and medicated IUI

There are two types of IUI treatment: natural and medicated. The main difference between them is whether female patients need hormone medication to help release of an egg from the ovaries.

In natural IUI, no medications are used, while with medicated IUI, fertility medications such as clomiphene citrate and letrozole are prescribed to stimulate the growth of one or two follicles. These follicles will then release the egg or eggs into the fallopian tubes to meet the injected prepared sperm.

For both types of IUI, patients undergo ultrasound scans to monitor the growth of the follicles. This allows us to determine when ovulation will occur and the time of the sperm injection.

IUI success rates in London

On average, 15% of IUI cycles result in a successful birth. However, it is important to know that success rates vary between medicated and natural IUI depending on individual factors such as age, medication and overall fertility health.
