Preparing for your semen analysis can be overwhelming, but there are important steps to consider before the procedure, including abstaining from sexual intercourse for a period of two to seven days.

There are a few important considerations that you need to take into account before your semen analysis, including:
Abstain from sexual intercourse – Avoid sexual activity for two to seven days before your test. This helps ensure that your sperm count is not affected, providing more reliable results.
Avoid excessive heat - Two to three days before your analysis, avoid excessive hot tubs, saunas, and baths, as high temperatures can temporarily impact sperm count.
Limit smoking and alcohol - It is advisable to refrain from smoking and limit alcohol intake during this time, as both can impact the quality and quantity of sperm produced.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle - Although this is more of a long-term goal, incorporating a healthy diet and regular exercise into your routine can positively impact sperm health and enhance your fertility. Starting early is beneficial.

When you arrive at the clinic, you will be directed to a private production room, where you can produce your sample. After your analysis, you are free to go home straight away. You shouldn’t feel any symptoms from the procedure; you should be able to resume normal activities.
If you are unable to produce a sample on site, don’t worry; you can choose to reschedule your appointment or produce a sample at home. If you decide to produce a sample at home, make sure you use the pot provided by the clinic. Additionally, ensure that the sample is not exposed to extreme temperatures, and drop it off at the clinic within an hour of its production.

If your GP refers you for a semen analysis, you can expect to receive your results within two weeks.
For private semen analysis as part of a couple's package, results will be discussed during a consultation one week later.
Patients who undergo a semen analysis without a consultation will receive their results from the embryology team within a couple of days.
Several key factors are analysed during a semen analysis, including pH levels, volume, sperm density, motility and morphology. Sperm density measures the quantity of sperm in your sample, while sperm motility assesses the sperm’s ability to move and fertilise an egg. If your sperm has poor motility, medical intervention may be necessary.
Finally, sperm morphology examines the shape and size of sperm. Abnormally shaped sperm can contribute to infertility issues. However, this will be discussed in detail during your consultation, along with suitable management options to help achieve parenthood.
