How holistic therapies may benefit your fertility journey

Holistic and alternative therapies have become increasingly popular and are being used alongside fertility treatment to help with mental and reproductive health. These therapies can include acupuncture, reflexology, meditation, and fertility yoga. While they do not provide a miracle cure for infertility, they can help in various ways. Specifically, by relieving stress and anxiety.

What are holistic therapies?

Holistic therapies, often referred to as complementary and alternative therapies, focus on treating the individual as a whole, addressing both mental and physical wellbeing rather than just targeting the symptoms of a condition.

This type of treatment falls outside of mainstream healthcare and includes practices such as acupuncture, reflexology, yoga and meditation.

These therapies are thought to help reduce stress and promote a positive mindset for those undergoing fertility treatment.

Although there is no conclusive evidence that stress directly affects fertility outcomes, there are suggestions that it can influence reproductive function.

It is essential to understand that holistic therapies should complement, rather than replace, conventional fertility treatments.

Types of holistic therapies for fertility

There are various holistic therapies available, but it’s essential to speak to your doctor or fertility clinic before trying any other options.

  • Acupuncture – This type of therapy aims to relieve stress and improve overall wellbeing. Acupuncture works by rebalancing the body’s energy flow. By inserting fine needles at specific points, the acupuncturist stimulates the body’s natural healing response, triggering the release of substances that may relieve stress and pain. Many patients use acupuncture alongside IVF treatments, reporting increased feelings of control and reduced stress during their treatment process.

  • Reflexology – Reflexology is an ancient practice that applies pressure to specific points on the hands and feet that correspond to internal organs, including the fallopian tubes and ovaries. It has been suggested that reflexology can help regulate the menstrual cycle. For men, it may improve sperm production.

  • Fertility massage – Focusing on the pelvic and abdominal area, fertility massage uses gentle techniques with the aim of improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, supporting hormonal balance and promoting overall relaxation. This increased circulation is thought to foster the reproductive organs with nutrients and oxygen, while also helping to relieve physical and emotional tension that can impact fertility. Fertility massage can also support individuals with fertility conditions, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, it is important to understand that fertility massage should not replace traditional medical treatment for PCOS.

  • Nutritional therapy – Diet and nutrition can influence your fertility health and nutritional therapy aims to improve reproductive health through a balanced, healthy diet. Many nutritional therapists and fertility experts often recommend following a Mediterranean diet, which may help enhance egg and sperm quality, regulate hormones and reduce inflammation. It is important to avoid making drastic changes to your diet without first consulting your doctor or a nutritional therapist.

  • Yoga - Fertility yoga combines gentle postures, breathing exercises, and meditation techniques aimed at supporting reproductive health. This practice focuses on reducing tension and anxiety. For men, practising yoga can reduce stress and it has been suggested that it can improve sperm. Yoga also emphasises the mind and body connection, through movement and breathing exercises, alleviating the emotional and physical tension often associated with infertility.

Additionally, yoga can encourage a sense of community among individuals who are experiencing similar journeys. Having that sense of community is essential, especially for those struggling with fertility issues.

How can holistic therapies benefit my fertility journey?

Holistic therapies can provide additional support for individuals facing fertility difficulties or undergoing treatment. This approach tailors the therapy to individual circumstances.

Trying to conceive can be overwhelming, and stress can impact hormonal balance, which is essential for ovulation and implantation. Treatments such as acupuncture and reflexology may help alleviate stress and anxiety.

While fertility treatments can be effective on their own, the success of any approach depends on individual circumstances; what works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, it's important not to compare your journey to that of others, as each person's experience is unique.

If you have any concerns about incorporating holistic therapies into your fertility treatment plan, speak to your fertility clinic or doctor. They will provide you with the support and guidance you need throughout your fertility journey.
