What does a Lab Manager do?

As Lab Manager for TFP GCRM Fertility, Nicole's role is to oversee all the service provision from the fertility lab. This includes ensuring all staff are appropriately trained and are maintaining their skills and promoting their development. Nicole also ensures all the equipment is working and maintained appropriately, as well as providing best quality skills and embryology knowledge to care for our patients. She is also responsible for ensuring the lab is working to all standards set by the HFEA Code of Practice and following all TFP standards of care.

Education

Nicole Gibson graduated with an honour’s degree in Development Biology from Glasgow University in 1994 and was immediately secured a post as a Trainee Embryologist in the NHS in Edinburgh. Whilst working in this role, Nicole gained the post-graduate ACE certificate (superseded by ARCS). Aspiring to be a more ‘rounded’ embryologist, Nicole also undertook a course in counselling to fully understand patient needs. Nicole is also a Diplomate of the Royal College of Pathologists and a HCPC certified Clinical Scientist.

Experience

Following her embryologist training in Edinburgh, Nicole moved back to Glasgow in 1998 and has worked at 3 clinics in the Glasgow area, culminating in joining TFP GCRM Fertility in 2010 as an embryologist. Nicole has overseen the development of two new specialist laboratories in TFP GCRM Fertility which has allowed the clinic to grow and help more people in their fertility journey to parenthood. Nicole was subsequently promoted to Deputy Lab Manager and then Lab Manager. As an expert in the field, she presents at national and international conferences to share best practice for fertility labs and standards of care for patients.

Nicole is a current member of ARCS and the BFS and a supporter of PET. She has released publications on the best practice for FSH administration and application of GnRH-agonist trigger and blastocyst vitrification in women with high AMH levels, showing higher cumulative live birth rates and higher safety for expecting mothers and their children.
