Female Fertility Tests

Whether you have been struggling to conceive naturally, or you simply want to understand more about your fertility, we provide fertility tests.

You need to have completed fertility assessments before you can start a cycle of IVF of fertility treatment. The fertility tests we carry out at TFP include an internal ultrasound scan and ovarian assessments.

The right tests for you will depend on your personal circumstances and health struggles. That’s why we use a variety of fertility assessments to identify whether there are any problems that may be causing you fertility trouble.

Our fertility specialists will talk you through the tests you’re having and whether they need to be scheduled at certain times during the month.

Ovarian assessment

The ovarian assessment we carry out helps us decide the best option of fertility treatment for you. Fertility blood tests are taken and analysed for Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), which helps us to assess your potential reaction to stimulating drugs, and predict how many eggs we might be able to collect. We also perform a trans-vaginal ultrasound, done at any stage of your menstrual cycle, which enables us to look closely and identify:

The volume of your ovaries: Ovaries tend to decrease in size in the time before menopause. Smaller ovaries are linked with a poor response to IVF stimulation drugs.

Your antral follicle count: This test is a good predictor of how your ovaries will respond to the stimulation drugs. It will give us a good idea of how many eggs might be collected.

Fertility hormone test: Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is produced by the supporting cells around the eggs in the ovary and is the best single indicator of responses to fertility drugs. As you age and the number of eggs in your ovaries falls, we see a decrease in the level of AMH in your blood. Measuring it is a good way to get an indication of your ovarian reserve. AMH levels fall rapidly after the age of about 40. The levels of AMH in the blood don’t change across your cycle, so we can do this test on any day.

Fertility virology test

Before treatment, you also need to have a set of virology screening results. You can use recent test results if you have them. Some of the results will need to be dated within the 3 months before starting treatment, if it’s your first cycle. For subsequent cycles, they need to be dated within the last 2 years. Any and all fertility blood tests will be explained. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Fertility testing before trying to get pregnant

Making the decision to start trying for a baby can be life-changing. However, if you and your partner are trying to conceive naturally but haven’t been able to, you may start to wonder if you should undergo fertility testing. We recommend that it is time to check with a doctor if you have had regular, unprotected intercourse for 12 months without conception.

It is important for both partners to have fertility testing as there could be a fertility problem with one or both of you, and assessing you both is the best way to ensure an accurate result. At TFP, we carry out a number of private fertility tests for men and women that will help you have a family.

What are the chances of identifying a problem?

At TFP we are specialists in fertility issues and treatments. We will work with you and your partner to find out why you are struggling to conceive and how we can help. Most individuals and couples who come to us do receive a diagnosis. However, sometimes it can be difficult to find out exactly why some people are struggling to conceive. Whatever the case, at TFP we work closely with you to find a reason for your fertility issues.

Unexplained infertility diagnosis

If you receive a diagnosis for unexplained infertility, we know this can be upsetting and frustrating. However, many couples with unexplained infertility do go on to conceive naturally and there are treatments we can recommend to help improve your chances of successful conception.
