Gynaecological examination

Pregnant woman looking at ultrasound

Gynaecological ultrasound

Vaginal ultrasound examination is performed to assess the shape, size and structure of the uterus and endometrium (the mucous membrane that is lined with the uterine cavity). It is also used to assess the location, size and activity of the ovaries.

During pharmacological ovarian stimulation, used in in vitro fertilization (IVF), it allows your doctor to assess the preparation of the endometrium and the amount and maturity of the ovarian follicles in which the oocytes mature.

With repeated ultrasound examinations on successive days of the menstrual cycle, the doctor can also check whether a woman ovulates properly. This is when, usually from the 10th day of the cycle, a transvaginal ultrasound is performed every 2-3 days to assess the growth of the Graaf follicle, its rupture, and the subsequent growth of the endometrium.

From the beginning of fertility treatment, ultrasound is a basic and indispensable tool in the diagnosis and monitoring of ovarian function. It allows your doctor to make the right decisions to increase the chance of success of the procedure and to minimize the risk of adverse effects. Ovulation monitoring with ultrasound should be performed during ovulation induction, stimulation, and hyperstimulation.

When and how it is performed?

The ultrasound is painless and can be performed during every gynaecological visit, regardless of the day of the cycle.

Our fertility specialist will always discuss the results with you after the test and tell you what the implications of the ultrasound image are for your path to parenthood. After the examination at the TFP office, you will receive the examination result with photographic documentation.
