Hysteroscopy

Woman belly, hands

Hysteroscopy is a procedure used to view the inside of the uterus under magnification. It allows us to assess changes in the endometrium and inside the uterine cavity and determine possible further treatment.

It is performed using a hysteroscope, which is a narrow tube with a light and a camera at the end. It is inserted through the vagina, into the cervix, and then into the uterine cavity. The image from the camera is displayed on a monitor, so the doctor can see inside the patient's uterus in detail. The examination can be combined with a simultaneous therapeutic procedure, for example, the removal of intrauterine adhesions, myomas or polyps.

The patient is qualified for the procedure by a gynaecologist on the basis of her medical history, gynaecological examination, and transvaginal ultrasound examination. In our clinics, we have new, high-quality hysteroscopes and the procedure is performed right away with extensive diagnostics.

The hysteroscopic procedure can be performed after the last day of your period, up to the middle of the cycle, i.e. up to about day 15 of the cycle. In women with abnormal bleeding, it is best to perform the examination between periods or at the time when the bleeding is least intense. In patients undergoing treatment for infertility, it is advisable to perform a vaginal biocenosis test (so-called vaginal cleanliness) or a test for Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

How does the hysteroscopy procedure proceed?

The scheme of preparation for the procedure is determined individually by the doctor during the qualifying visit. The procedure is usually performed under general intravenous anaesthesia.

On the day of the procedure, patients should fast. Bring your slippers, nightgown and dressing gown with you. The procedure is carried out in the hospital, usually within two days. After the procedure, you should be picked up from the hospital by an accompanying person.
