Why IVF for military families should be considered

Being part of the military can be challenging. Especially for couples who often face long periods of separation and the risk of injury, which can potentially lead to fertility issues.

However, with various fertility treatments available including in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, it is still possible to have a family when you are ready.

The unique fertility challenges military families face

Being part of the military comes with many challenges but more so for those who want children. There is a higher likelihood of service women experiencing fertility problems compared to individuals who are not in the military.

Factors such as early years of service, training schedules and frequent travel can all contribute to delays in starting a family. As you get older, the difficulty in conceiving can increase.

Many individuals in the military often experience high levels of stress, which can negatively impact both their emotional and physical wellbeing. This wellbeing is important when trying to conceive as stress and trauma can lead to fertility issues.

Additionally, couples need to have sexual intercourse before or around the time of ovulation, known as the fertile window. However, due to deployment, many couples may spend extended periods apart, affecting their chances of conceiving.

Training activities such as basic combat training can also disrupt menstruation, leading to further complications with fertility. Moreover, individuals active in war zones may be exposed to harmful substances and injuries, that can ultimately affect their reproductive health. Any injury to the genital area or spinal cord can potentially make it more difficult to conceive.

Why IVF is a great option for military families

If you are experiencing fertility issues, IVF treatment can make it possible for you to have the family you have longed for.

Freezing eggs, sperm or embryos before deployment can help preserve your fertility in case of injury. With this, you can maintain your fertility and start treatment when you are ready. Therefore, giving you peace of mind knowing you may have a chance to have children, no matter what happens while you are away.

Providing support for military spouses

There is a wide range of support available for military spouses and families, including the Armed Forces Covenant. It is a pledge made by the government charities, organisations and businesses to ensure military families receive the same treatment as other individuals who are not in the military. The support includes healthcare, education, employment housing, childcare and financial assistance.

Additionally, mental health support is available for families, providing them with the advice and guidance they need. These include Op Courage, Combat Stress and Togetherall.

The finances of IVF

Women under 40 may be eligible for three free NHS-funded IVF cycles. To qualify, they must meet a specific criteria, which include trying to conceive for two or more years or having been unsuccessful after undergoing 12 or more cycles of artificial insemination, with at least six of these involving intrauterine insemination. Women aged between 40 and 42 will be offered one full IVF cycle if they also meet the eligibility criteria.
