If you have been trying to conceive for a long period of time and are worried about your fertility health, a semen analysis could give you the answer you need.
An estimated 7% of all men are affected by infertility. A semen analysis assesses the quantity and quality of an individual’s sperm and is the first and most essential part of evaluating male fertility. However, it is important to understand what’s involved in the process.
If you and your partner have been having difficulty conceiving, a semen analysis can help identify any infertility issues. It can also determine whether a vasectomy procedure has been successful. Additionally, if you have undergone any medical treatment, such as chemotherapy, a semen analysis can highlight its effects on your sperm.
We understand coming to terms with infertility can be challenging. However, with this procedure, our fertility experts can evaluate your sample and design a treatment plan that works for you.
When preparing for semen analysis, there are a few important things to consider. Firstly, you should avoid sexual intercourse for two to seven days before your test. This will help ensure that your sperm count is not affected and that the results are reliable.
It is also best to refrain from smoking and limit your alcohol intake as this can impact the quality and quantity of sperm produced. Furthermore, try to incorporate a healthy diet and regular exercise into your routine, as these play an essential role in producing healthy sperm and enhancing your fertility.
At the clinic, you will be directed to a private production room, where you can produce your sample. If you are unable to produce a sample on the day, don’t worry. You can either reschedule your appointment or produce a sample at home. If you choose to produce a sample at home, make sure you use the pot provided by the clinic. Ensure that the sample is not exposed to hot or cold temperatures and drop it off at the clinic within an hour of it being produced.
With semen analysis, there are plenty of key factors that are analysed. This includes pH levels, volume, sperm density, motility and morphology.
Sperm density measures the quantity of sperm in your sample, while sperm motility assesses the sperm’s ability to move and fertilise an egg. If your sperm has poor motility, you may need medical intervention to help.
Finally, sperm morphology examines the shape and size of sperm. Abnormally shaped, sperm is a factor that can cause infertility issues. However, this will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
If your GP refers you for a semen analysis, the results can take up to two weeks from having it done. If you undergo a private semen analysis as part of a couple's package, the results will be discussed during a consultation one week later. Additionally, patients who have a semen analysis without a consultation will receive their results from the embryology team within a couple of days.
We understand that receiving your semen analysis results can be overwhelming. The test will assess the quantity, motility, and morphology of your sample.
Rest assured, our fertility team will thoroughly discuss the results with you and address any concerns you may have. We will then work together to decide what treatment is right for you.
Several factors can impact the quality of semen. Lifestyle choices play a significant role, including limiting alcohol and maintaining a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Additionally, smoking can reduce sperm count and cause DNA fragmentation. This is when the DNA in sperm cells breaks down, which can potentially lead to infertility.
Fitting regular exercise into your daily routine is also essential. It helps to maintain a healthy weight as individuals who are overweight tend to have a lower sperm count, while those who are underweight may experience fertility issues due to nutritional deficiencies. Furthermore, it is important to keep in mind that the quality of sperm can decline as you get older, therefore age can also play a factor.
Our fertility experts will offer advice and guidance on which treatment is right for you. However, there’s no obligation to go ahead with the treatment. After all, the decision is completely up to you.
