How much your fertility treatment costs depends on what kind of treatment you get, and how many rounds you need. However, health insurance companies may cover a substantial amount of the costs. Find out more here.
Finances are a huge factor to take into consideration when it comes to planning fertility treatment. Germany offers state support if certain conditions are met, which vary from federal state to federal state. This is in addition to possible partial coverage of the costs by insurance.
Financial compensation offered will vary between states. Find more information about whether you could be eligible here.
More and more statutory health insurance companies are now granting high or even full-cost coverage of fertility treatment if certain criteria, including age and cause, are met.
Luckily, couples who are not married can also be reimbursed on a pro-rata basis. We advise asking your health insurance company for information regarding which costs they can cover, however you are also welcome to pop in and ask us our advice.
Before you begin the treatment, your treatment plan must be approved by your health insurance company. This will take place at the fertility centre. Statutory health insurance is obliged to pay out for at least some of the treatment so long as the following conditions are met:
The patients are married
The couple must be 25 before the start of treatment. The woman must not be over 40 and the man not over 50
The couple must be HIV-negative and the woman must have had a Rubella inoculation
The couple must have received advice regarding the medical, psychological and social aspects of artificial insemination by a doctor who s not involved in the treatment
If ICSI is taking place, the couple must have 2 current spermiograms taken at least 12 weeks apart that meet ICSI criteria
Neither partner should be sterilised
If you do not fulfil any one of these criteria, you will need to pay for the treatment yourself.
If you (the couple) or one of you is privately insured and the childlessness is caused by the insured person, ("causation principle"), then private billing applies.
In this case, we will arrange for an individual fee contract with you. Reimbursement of the costs by your private health insurance or other reimbursement agencies (e.g., allowance, etc.) may not be guaranteed, or not fully.
You will be made fully aware of the costs before your treatment commences. You will receive a detailed cost estimate from us beforehand, in accordance with the "Gebührenordnung für Ärzte (GOÄ)".
Some other cases also call for private billing. These include:
The couple does not meet the requirements for cost coverage by the statutory health insurance.
The benefits of the statutory insurance have been exhausted.
Measures are carried out that are not part of the benefits of statutory health insurance.
