State support

We know that the financial aspect often plays a role in infertility treatment. In Germany, couples with an unfulfilled wish to have a child have the possibility to apply for state support in addition to the possible partial coverage of the costs by the statutory or private health insurance.

Different conditions apply in each federal state and the amount of financial support also varies. You can find more information on state support here.

Statutory health insurance

Despite a 2004 law stating that couples should privately fund half or more of their fertility treatments, more and more statutory health insurance providers are offering generous - even full - grants.

To find out which criterias you meet, and what finances can be covered by your health insurance, get in touch with them directly, or pop in and ask us for our advice in the clinic.

Prerequisites for cost coverage for persons with statutory health insurance

Before treatment begins, you'll get a complete cost plan sorted with your doctor and health insurance company. The statutory health insurance fund is only obliged to pay out should if the following conditions be met:

  • The patients must be married to each other

  • The wife must be under 40, the husband under 50, and neither should be below 25.

  • Both should be HIV negative and the wife must have an immune protection against rubella

  • The couple must have previously been advised by a doctor about the medical, psychological and social aspects of artificial insemination, who does not perform the procedures themselves

  • If ICSI is taking place, 2 current spermiograms (taken at least 12 weeks apart) which meet the ICSI criteria must be available. The sperm is assessed in accordance with the valid WHO guidelines.

  • Neither the wife nor the husband should be sterilised.

If you as a couple do not fulfil the above-mentioned requirements, only private billing of the fertility treatment is possible.

Private health insurance

Private billing takes place if the couple or one member of the couple is privately insured.

If private billing is the option you're going with, we'll make sure we establish a transparent fee contract with you before we start. You will receive a detailed cost estimate from us in advance according to the "Gebührenordnung für Ärzte (GOÄ)".

Keep in mind that reimbursement of the costs by the private health insurance company or other reimbursement procedures may not be guaranteed or not fully.

Knappschaftsversicherung (Miner's insurance)

The Knappschaft (Miner's insurance) will cover up to 500,00 EUR of the co-payment per fertility treatment attempt. This includes up to three treatment cycles and all treatment measures, aside from insemination in a spontaneous cycle, where up to eight treatments are supported.

The following conditions apply:

  • Both spouses must be insured with Knappschaftsversicherung (miner's insurance)

  • Both spouses must have reached the age of 25 before treatment starts

  • The woman must not have exceeded the age of 40 and the man the age of 50

  • Only the egg and sperm cells of the spouses may be used.
