More and more couples are seeking the assistance of TFP fertility centres on their journeys toward having the child they so desire: in Germany alone, around two million couples trying to conceive are unable to do so. One reason for this is social change. Many couples decide to have children only after they have completed their training and studies and got their careers on the right track. And if procreation is then no longer possible by natural means, the possibility of artificial insemination becomes an option. The chances of fulfilling that dream of having children are good: after exhausting all the treatment options, around 60 – 80% of those couples who were previously unable to have children become parents.
Between 2001 and 2013, an average of 12,852 children per year were born as a result of artificial insemination in Germany. Many of these were born in one of the four German TFP fertility centres in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. This positive figure could have been much higher were it not for a new law introduced in 2004 which meant that health insurance companies must now cover only half the cost of the maximum of three treatments. The good news is that many health insurance companies have now decided to voluntarily reimburse a higher proportion of the costs. And unmarried couples can now also look forward to financial support from health insurance companies for artificial insemination in Germany.
