The IVF Fund: A good contribution

A large part of the costs of artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are paid for from the IVF Fund. In order to be eligible for support from the IVF Fund, certain conditions regarding cause, age or health insurance must be met. You can find out exactly what these indicators are under IVF Fund costs.

2019 IVF Fund report

The annual IVF Fund report shows the pregnancy and baby take-home rates of the 30 Austrian IVF centres and compares the individual clinics with this national average.

In 2019, a total of 11028 IVF Fund attempts (fresh and cryocycles) were performed in 7131 couples at all IVF centres.

The baby take-home rate per embryo transfer was 28.5% for this national average. However, our clinic, TFP Kinderwunsch Wels, was able to achieve an above-average baby take-home rate per embryo transfer of 32.6 %.

We also had a pregnancy rate per puncture of 29.5 %, which was above the national average of 27 %.

In line with our philosophy of following the path of the most natural fertilisation possible, because with an IVF rate of 56.1 % we clearly stood out from the Austrian average of 23.9 %.

Prices in Wels for private payers

Private insurance payers or self-payers cannot benefit from the support of the IVF fund and must fully (100%) pay for the treatment costs and the expenses for medicines.

You belong to the private payer group, if the woman is older than 40 years old or the over 50. Additionally, patients must bear the costs themselves, if the man or woman has taken measures to prevent procreation (intentional ligation of the female fallopian tubes or intentional ligation of the male spermatic cord/vasectomy).

The private reimbursement also comes into effect if you work abroad and are insured with a foreign health insurance company or if you do not have a permanent residency title in Austria.

German health insurance support

There are many different statutory health insurance companies in Germany. Each of these health insurances offers its policyholders different conditions for the financial support of fertility treatments. To find out whether the respective health insurance company in Germany will also support you with fertility treatment in Austria, you should definitely clarify this with your health insurance company before starting treatment.

According to the EU regulation, the German health insurance companies have to pay the same amount - regardless of whether the couple starts the treatment in Germany or IVF institute in Austria.

Important steps when examining the assumption of costs for fertility treatment by a German health insurance company in Austria are:

  • First contact your health insurance company and obtain the necessary payment confirmation for the treatment in Austria.

  • We will then send you all the necessary documents such as the cost estimate and a confirmation of compliance with the German guidelines.

  • As soon as we receive these documents back from you, we can proceed with more detailed planning of the treatment.
