Women are born with all of the eggs they will have in their lifetime, and the quality and quantity of these eggs gradually decrease with age. The biological clock ticks for each of us at a different rate. A good indicator of actual reproductive potential is the AMH concentration, which corresponds to the level of your ovarian reserve. AMH testing is a simple way to assess a woman's fertility.
The anti-Müllerian hormone was, until just a few years ago, thought to only play a role in the process of sex differentiation of the embryo during fetal development towards the male. However, it was discovered that the concentration of this hormone directly reflects the number of follicles available in the ovary, i.e. the ovarian reserve.
As women grow older, the pool and quality of their ova decreases, thus reducing their ability to have children. The results of the tests and a discussion with a specialist will give you an idea of your current reproductive potential and how it is estimated to change in the context of your plans for motherhood. If you are over 30 years of age, it is worth approaching the subject immediately.
The anti-Müllerian hormone test is also used prior to in vitro procedures.
During treatment with assisted fertilisation procedures already in progress, AMH levels are also a good marker of response to pharmacological ovarian stimulation.
The AMH determination is performed with a blood test. The blood sampling can take place at any time of day (you do not need to be fasting) and regardless of the phase of your cycle.
AMH levels are not affected by hormone or contraceptive therapy.
Once you have made an appointment with us, you are welcome to come to the clinic for one appointment only, where we will draw your blood in the laboratory, in a private atmosphere. The laboratory results themselves can be conveniently received via the Patient Portal without the need to visit us again.
The test result will not only provide information about your ovarian reserve, but also will help a qualified fertility specialist to diagnose possible problems, i.e. premature cessation of ovarian function or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
The AHM test is a great first step in estimating your reproductive potential, but to get a complete picture of your current situation, we also recommend considering full fertility assessment packages. Interpreting their results will provide a more reliable assessment of your fertility potential.
