Sperm freezing in Southampton

Sperm freezing is the most successful method of preserving a man's fertility so that he can try for a baby in the future. If you're considering freezing your sperm, our expert team at TFP Wessex Fertility is here to support you. With satellite clinics across Portsmouth, Basingstoke and Poole, we make specialist sperm freezing care accessible to patients throughout the Wessex region.

Preserving your fertility as a male

What is sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing, also known as sperm cryopreservation, is the process of collecting, cooling and safely storing a person's sperm.

Male fertility declines less rapidly than a female's, however, it can be a reassuring option if you're wanting to postpone parenthood.

Frozen sperm samples can be used in treatment cycles such as IUI and IVF, so that you have the option of trying for a family at a time that's right for you.

You may be considering sperm freezing if...

You're not ready to start a family

You're about to have a vasectomy

You have a condition or are undergoing treatment that affects your fertility

You're a transgender or non-binary person about to undergo gender affirming surgery

You’re in the armed forces or work a “hazardous” job

You want to preserve your fertility for personal or lifestyle reasons

Treatment

How does sperm freezing work?

At TFP Wessex Fertility, we guide patients across Southampton and the wider Wessex region through every step of the sperm freezing process with expert, personalised care. The sperm freezing process is relatively simple - we just require a few fresh sperm samples for testing and freezing purposes.

Fertility and screening tests

We'll first carry out a semen analysis to assess whether you have viable sperm to freeze. We'll also screen for any infection diseases, such as HIV or hepatitis C. The results of these screening tests won't stop you from freezing your sperm, but will ensure that any affected sperm samples are stored separately from others to prevent contamination.

Sperm sample

Following these tests, you'll need to produce a fresh sample of sperm which will be frozen. In most cases, you'll come into your chosen TFP Fertility clinic where you'll collect your sample in one of our production rooms. If this causes you some anxiety, you also have the option of producing your sample at home - we just ask that it's brought back to the clinic within one hour.

If you’re unable to produce a sperm sample, we can also retrieve it using a procedure called surgical sperm retrieval.

Once we have your sperm sample, this is mixed with a cryoprotectant to protect the sperm from damage during freezing.

Before freezing, the sperm sample is divided into separate containers so that it can be used in multiple treatments, if required. The samples are then rapidly cooled using a method called vitrification and safely stored in tanks of liquid nitrogen.

How successful is sperm freezing?

We estimate that 50% of frozen sperm will survive the freeze-thaw process. We freeze your sperm in individual straws so that not all sperm has to be thawed at once.

Fertility treatment using frozen sperm is just as successful as treatment using fresh sperm. When using frozen sperm, we use a technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), which involves injecting a single healthy sperm direction into the egg, to increase chances of successful fertilisation.
