Preparation for IVF

The process of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) involves combining egg cells with sperm outside the woman’s body under laboratory conditions. It is available to couples who failed to achieve the expected results with other methods of infertility treatment (according to the provisions of the Infertility Treatment Act, “other methods” mean conservative treatment and IUI).

The adequate preparation of both partners is essential prior to undergoing an IVF procedure. Patients should follow a healthy diet and physical activities in the preparation period enabling them to maintain a normal body mass index (BMI). It is common for patients undergoing infertility treatment to be either under-or overweight, which can have a significant impact on the treatment’s success. A normal BMI for a woman is in the range of 19-24.

According to doctors’ recommendations, patients should take medication regulating their progesterone levels before starting their IVF treatment (in a normal cycle, progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum following ovulation). The appropriate regulation of this hormone increases the chances of normal development for the implanted embryo. The supplementation begins on the day of egg collection and can last until the end of the first trimester.

In addition to purely medical recommendations for improving physical well-being, it is also very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle while trying for a baby with the help of assisted reproduction techniques. Smokers are encouraged to quit before egg collection. The substances contained in cigarettes have detrimental effects on egg quality and contribute to their premature insufficiency. Cigarettes also contribute to reduced sperm counts as well as poor motility and thus diminished chances of successful fertilisation.

While undergoing infertility treatment, it can be particularly difficult to remain calm and avoid stressful situations. The diagnosis of infertility and its treatment cause a strong emotional reaction in most patients and contribute to the deterioration of their well-being. If you are struggling to cope with the stress caused by the treatment, we recommend seeking support from a specialist. Infertility clinics usually offer appointments with a psychologist to help restore the inner balance and prepare for all potential treatment outcomes. In addition, it is advisable to keep active to help you relax and set aside your concerns and worries about the treatment.
