Causes of infertility

TFP fertility clinics in Klagenfurt

Infertility in a couple is diagnosed after 12 months of regular intercourse without contraception. According to research, the problem of infertility affects 15-18% of humanity, which equals about 80 million couples. In Poland, every fifth couple is struggling with infertility, so the difficulty of conceiving a child affects 1.5 million couples. As many as 30-50% of them only have a chance to conceiving through medically assisted procreation.

Infertility is a disease that affects both partners, not just the woman or the man. A female factor is just as often responsible for it as a male factor. Often in a couple, they coexist with each other. Unfortunately, for about 20% of infertile couples, the cause of childlessness remains unknown.

Ovulation problems as well as congenital and acquired anatomical abnormalities are among the most frequent causes of infertility in women. The most common cause in men is poor sperm parameters, which still have many unexplored roots.

The most important factors impacting fertility include:

  • Biology

  • Lifestyle

  • Environment

  • Health

The most common causes of infertility in women include ovulatory disorders and congenital and acquired anatomical abnormalities. In men, abnormal semen parameters predominate, leading to many causes, many of which are not yet fully investigated.

Remember that the time it takes to conceive increases with age. Although we are living longer and longer, our biological clock cannot be stopped. It is natural that a woman's likelihood of having a baby decreases as time goes on.

Did you also know that...?

  • An abstinence period of more than 5 days can have a negative impact on the sperm count.

  • In men with normal sperm parameters, the concentration and motility of sperm remain stable even when ejaculating daily.

  • After prolonged sexual abstinence (10 days or longer) the sperm parameters start decreasing in quality.

  • The highest fertility indicator (up to 37%/cycle) is achieved through daily intercourse. Intercourse every second day has a comparable chance of pregnancy (33%). In cases of intercourse once a week, the chances fall to 15%.

  • Smoking cigarettes certainly negatively impacts fertility. Consuming too much alcohol and caffeine will also affect fertility.
