In about 50% of couples with an unfulfilled desire to have children, the quality of the male sperm is the reason why pregnancy does not occur naturally.
A rapid clarification can be made by taking a spermiogram, which can be carried out directly by urologists in private practice or in the TFP fertility clinics. Here you can find out what causes poor sperm quality and how you can help to improve it yourself.
Viral diseases, medication, stress or an unhealthy lifestyle can disrupt sperm maturation. If the situation changes, sperm quality usually regenerates. Other diseases permanently impair sperm quality, for example:
Overcome mumps infection in childhood
Tumour diseases
Hormone disorders
Genetic infertility (chromosomal abnormality)
(Varikozele)Varicose veins in the testicles (varicocele)
Basically, a healthy and mindful lifestyle can help to improve sperm quality. Our doctors at the TFP fertility clinics will be happy to advise you personally on your individual treatment options.
A spermiogram shows a momentary view of the semen quality. To ensure the result of a delivery, the spermiogram should be repeated at least every 8 weeks.
Folgende Faktoren sind bei der Beurteilung der Spermienqualität ausschlaggebend:
The sperm density (number of sperm per millilitre)
Sperm motility (motility)
The sperm optics (morphology)
Exercise regularly
Reduce your alcohol consumption
Reduce your intake of unsaturated fat acids ("Becel", fish, omega-3 fat acids)
Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
Regular sexual intercourse, 2 times a week
Moderate coffee consumption
Taking MACA up to 1500mg daily
Give up nicotine!!!
Avoid tight trousers
Avoid hot baths and saunas
Don't use heated car seats
Avoid stress
Avoid contact with paint, steams and spray chemicals
Please remember that although you are making long-term changes to your lifestyle, your sperm quality can be improved after as little as three months. During illness (flu, fever, inflammation, when taking antibiotics) sperm quality can deteriorate and can take up to 12 weeks to fully regenerate.
You can have a spermiogram to assess your sperm quality according to the WHO guidelines at any time at our TFP clinics. Please make an appointment under the respective telephone number or via e-mail.
If you prefer to produce your sperm sample outside of the clinic, please remember that it must be brought to our lab within 30 to 45 minutes and kept at body temperature!
